The height and spread of the tree is reduced by removing the ends of the branches evenly throughout the crown by a specified amount to leave a balanced and maintained shape true to the species although, in some instances, the technique is used to reduce mechanical stress on individual branches. The effect is to reduce the risk of failure of the tree and minimise its impact on nearby structures due to proximity, shading and light loss. Care has to be taken with the type, size and severity of the cuts to avoid over-stressing the tree. Please also see Crown Thinning and Crown Lifting
