In open areas, trees can often be felled in one, but proper planning will ensure less disruption, easier clearance and, therefore, potentially a lower cost to the client. The felling direction is decided by a careful study of the tree to determine how the branches look and grow, the tree’s natural direction of fall and the effect of wind direction. The area around the tree is cleared in the intended felling direction, plus an area behind the tree to facilitate retreat. The trunk is then pruned of branches and twigs to approximately shoulder height.
The next stage is to decide on the cutting technique and tools required, and this will be dictated by the size and condition of the tree. It is not uncommon to use ropes and winches where the level of decay makes the felling process more unpredictable.
